Moving Boxes
Thinking about reusing your friend’s moving boxes they have used a hundred times? Think again – unless you do not care if your items are damaged in transit. Proper moving materials are the best way to get your items safely from Point A to Point B. More than anything else, flimsy boxes or improper packing is the cause of damage to your items while moving. Don’t scrimp on these – that is, if you want everything to get to your new destination in one place. Really, you need the right supplies in general to assist you with your move. Not everything works best in a box, but you still need to transport your other items safely.
Different types of boxes
Small – small, yet sturdy boxes are the best for books and records, along with other heavier items. Do not pack a bunch of books in a huge box, unless you want an army to try to pick it up.
Medium – these boxes can fit a variety of items. Toys, shoes, pots and pans and many other items can work well in a medium-sized box.
Large – 4.5 cubic feet and larger boxes are the best for packing lightweight items like pillows, comforters, large stuffed animals and other lightweight household items.
Mirror – odd-shaped or very fragile items? They make special boxes for everything from your flat-screen television to the antique mirror you own.
Wardrobe – these large, tall boxes have a long bar across the top that allows you to hang your clothes, drapes or even linens so they stay nice and fresh during transport.
Mattress – yes, there are boxes for your mattress. You can pack your mattress and box spring separately, or you can simply wrap them in plastic and secure everything so no moisture or dirt gets inside. A big reason people would choose a box over wrapping would be so their mattress does not get crushed during the moving process.
Dishpack – these dividers go into a box and are designed to hold your fragile items like china, dishware, vases and more apart from one another so they do not hit each other in transit and break. It is still a good idea to wrap items that are going in these partitions, just to be extra cautious.
Moving boxes come in all shapes and sizes, and serve different purposes. Try to get the newest boxes you can, as old boxes can come apart during a move and cause a lot of damage.
