Pets On The Move
Are you planning on moving? It’s easy to get overwhelmed with all the details you need to take care of. You have important items that you want to take with you and that’s easy to plan for. You have a pet that you want to move too and that will take you a little more planning. So here are some suggestions to get you started in moving with your pets:
Prepare a checklist
As soon as you decide to move, make a list. Decide when and how you will move; pick a person who will be in charge of your pet(s) moving day. Make an appointment with the vet for your pet. Ask about documents, sedation, and get a copy of health records. Don’t forget to get a recommendation for a vet in the new location.
Look into state and local regulations for relocating pets
If you are moving to a new state, check into the laws of the new state. Most states have laws that apply to bringing in dogs, cats, horses, birds that belong to the parrot family and other pets. The only pets you don’t have to worry about are tropical fish! You will also want to look into licensing regulations. More cities are also requiring that you license cats as well as dogs. The number of pets you have also might be limited so you might want to check into this before you decide on a new location.
Health of pets
When you visit your current vet, make sure you obtain the health records, health certificate and any necessary shots needed. Your vet can also prescribe and medication needed for travel sickness or anxiety.
Documents needed
The type of pet you have might require that you obtain an entry permit. Every location has its own requirements, so check with the regulatory agency or your vet. You will also want to make sure that your pet’s rabies tag is securely attached to its collar. Only 4 states do not require that dogs and/or cats have the rabies inoculation. You will also want to be sure to have an identification tag on your pet. The tag will list important info regarding your pet should you get separated.
Physical transportation
There are only two ways you can actually move pets: in your car, or by plane either accompanying you or by traveling as air freight. Air travel has specific regulations so you will need to contact airlines and find out about charges and carriers. The size of your pet will also determine how he can travel.
Other types of pets
Horses, ponies, tropical fish, caged birds and small pets like gerbils and “unusual” pets such as snakes and lizards, need transportation arrangements too. Some can be transported with you in your car or you can crate and ship by plane. It all depends on what arrangements you can and want to make. Check with the airlines to find out their crating requirements.
Getting your pet used to his new home
To make the travel and relocation experience better for your pet, you should make sure familiar things are with him. Bring his favorite blanket, treats, and toys. His normal food and water dishes will also make the new place seem more like home.
