Getting Organized for Your Move
Moving is the easiest thing you have ever done, right? Probably not many people will say yes to that question. Moving is complicated, involves a lot of coordinating, and is a downright headache for a lot of people. If you are organized, your move is that much easier. There are several resources out there to help you make your move a little less painful. A moving checklist is a great place to start to help you be successful. If you are like a lot of clients we see, you know you need to move, but you do not get into the planning stage until a couple of weeks before. If you are one of those people who is an anomaly and is getting ready to move months in advance, but it is not likely the general population is like that. For that reason, most moving checklists out there are not going to work for you. Some of them have you planning out six months ahead of time. There are a few key things you need to make sure you have covered when you move, and the rest is not quite as urgent. Some of the most important things you need to figure out when you move are:
Kids – if you have kids, you definitely need to figure out some details associated with them. Are they changing schools? Do you have their medical and dental records or have the information to get them transferred? What are your plans for them the day of your move? See our blog post on moving with kids for more necessary information about moving with the little ones in your life.
Pets – do you have all of their veterinary records or have those available for transfer? Do you have any ‘papers’ you may need to travel with them? What are your plans for them the day of your move?
Utilities – be sure to disconnect all of the utilities at your old property and turn them on at your new property in advance of your move.
Transport – how are you transporting all of your items? This is where you decide if you are moving everything on your own or employing a moving company. Of course, if you want to make yourself a complete basket case prior to your move, you can add on other worries, such as making sure you have different colored markers to use for all of the different boxes for the different rooms, specialty boxes for your plants and more. If you are an uber-organized person, that’s great, but for the general population, check out our simple Moving Checklist to get an idea of what you need do in order to have a seamless move.
