Your Moving Process

Full Service Moving Companies

It's important to have a process to follow for the things we do in life. We often have little habits and processes for stuff like washing dishes or how we proceed on our daily commute. Moving is no different. In fact, it is vital to have a system to follow for a move. After all, you likely have a lot of important items to move. Then, you need to keep a sense of continuity in the lives of your children. I want to say a few things about the moving process, covering these topics:

  • Downsizing
  • Packing
  • Hiring Movers
  • Planning for Moving Day

DownsizingDownsizing should be the first step. As soon as you know you'll have to move, start sorting through your clothes, books, dishware, etc. to see what can be tossed out, sold, donated, or otherwise done away with. This may be a good way to make a few extra bucks or to help out a favorite charity. When people ask me how to go about an effective downsizing, I mention the ?six-month rule.? If you haven't used or thought about a item in 6 months or more, then it's probably time to downsize that item.PackingStart packing as far in advance as you possibly can. You can start with seasonal or specialty clothes which aren't currently in use. If you won't be camping or skiing before the move, pack away all of that equipment. Books are good ones to pack early. When boxing these items, be sure you label the boxes carefully. You may want to alphabetize your books, so label their boxes accordingly. Be consistent about where you label the boxes. It's probably best to label them on the side, so that you can tell what is what in a stack of boxes.Hiring MoversHire a good moving company. Seek out a company who insures its employees and whose employees are all regular employees, not temporary workers or day laborers. Make sure they have storage available, just in case you need it. If you choose, you can have the movers pack all of your items. This can be beneficial, since they will be placing the boxes in their respective rooms upon arrival at the new house. Consistent labeling will be helpful.Planning for Moving DayPlan for moving day. Have a plan in place to take care of your pets, your children, and yourself. While the movers are working, you may want to spend time exploring your new neighborhood or at a movie. Or Or, Or, Some people take short, relaxing day hikes to clear their minds from the stress of moving. Or, you can choose to stay on-site, directing the movers at every turn and getting your furniture exactly where you want it.Check out our Moving Checklist for more steps to make your move easy!
