How to Pack like the Pros
Packing is easy, right? Well, let me tell you... I've been in this business for quite a long time and I've seen enough packing mistakes and successes to last a few lifetimes. So, I'd like to share a little of my experience with you so that you can avoid making some common mistakes. I've even put together a handy checklist that you can download to help with your moving day. I'm going to discuss a few key points in this post:
- How to organize for the transition.
- Pad Wrapping for Special Items
- Labeling, Labeling, Labeling!
- Prepare items to simplify the mover's job.
- Make a plan for moving day
Organize for the Transition TimeWhen you're moving, you probably think of only two things: how things are now and how they will be once you're fully moved into your new home. In the meantime, life goes on. So, be sure to prepare by changing your address. You can save time by using the online form at usps.com. Gather all of your important veterinary, medical, and school papers into a folder you keep with you for easy access.Pad WrappingYou might not be aware, but there are special pads for packing. They look like blankets but are thicker. Use these to cover your larger, more delicate, items. You might use these blankets to cover a glass top for a dinner or coffee table. Sculptors use these to wrap their bronze pieces and artists pack their framed paintings in blankets to ensure that they arrive intact. To really pack like a pro, use padded blankets. You may want to pad wrap all of your furniture. This protects your furniture from the other items on the truck, as well as protecting your old and new home from incidents when your sofa goes through a narrow doorway.LabelingOne key to a successful move is to label each box to indicate the contents and where the box is headed. This may seem like common sense. But, make sure you have a large marker on hand when you pack your home. Our storage facility is packed full of boxes labeled in just this way and when clients come looking for their child's special toy or a special serving dish, we are always grateful to be able to locate the exact box it's in. If you're using movers, make sure that each box is labeled on the top and sides in large, clear lettering.Prepare for the MoversLabeling is a big must, but you might want to take steps such as dismantling patio furniture, unplug and disconnect all of the appliances you are taking with you, and making sure each box is completely full and sealed with tape. Be sure to keep all of the screws and other hardware associated with the patio furniture secured in a bag that you can label and store or tape in an inconspicuous spot on one of the parts. Be sure to disconnect the washer and refrigerator from the plumbing, in addition to unplugging all appliances. If boxes aren't completely full, the items may shake around in moving. Try to fill extra space with old clothing.Moving DayWhile the movers bring your items into your new home, take time to enjoy the day. Take the family to a movie or find a special location for an outing. If everything is well-packed, you should breathe easy while the movers do the heavy lifting.
