Top 5 Arizona Summer Getaways
There's no better way to make a summer memorable than by spending time out in the desert beauty of Arizona. Our beautiful state has plenty to offer and I love getting out to explore. When I'm not moving, that is!So, in no particular order, is a list of five great options for a weekend, or longer, getaway. Enjoy!
Flagstaff
If you are up for a nice summer drive, then head north! The I-17 leads to the High Country which includes Flagstaff and Sedona, and even Jerome, a fun little town that has some great art and restaurants, and a cool park for the kids. But if I have enough time, I love to get up to Flagstaff where my kids and I can experience some cool temperatures and green trees. We used to always check out the Cardinals Training Camp, but we have to find something new to do this summer!
White Mountains
Head east to the White Mountains. You can ski there in the winter, but I like the cooler temps in the high elevations. There's lots to do. Some of our friends go mountain biking, golfing, or ATV riding. I like to take a hike, and I've even visited the Apache County Historical Museum, which shows the whole history of the area from ancient cultures up through pioneer days. I'm now considering a longer backpacking trip. They have looped trails so that I can return to my starting point without having to backtrack or arrange for a pick-up.A lot of my guys like disc golf, which is also called frisbee golf. Since they're always talking about it, I'll include that the White Mountains region has two courses: one in Meadow View Park in Pinetop and another in Show Low City Park.
Hannagan Meadow Lodge
The whole White Mountain region is spectacular and full of options, but I have to mention Hannagan Meadow Lodge. It's up above 9,000 feet so it's a great escape from summer heat. They have rooms and cabins and lots to do. They arrange hiking and fly fishing trips, and you can even go horseback riding.
Mormon Lake Lodge
Mormon Lake Lodge is another favorite. Heck, they're all favorites, but you'll really like visiting here. If you haven’t seen Mormon Lake, you are really missing out. You can bring your own boat, or they have plenty to rent there, along with life jackets for all.
The Grand Canyon
Well, it's an obvious choice, but if you live in Phoenix, it's easy to take it for granted. I mean, I'm sure there are people in New York City who've never been to the top of the Empire State Building. I love to hike, and this is a great place to do it. There are so many things to do and see here that it's sort of overwhelming. I'd check the National Parks Service website to start to narrow down your options. You'll never go wrong with a trip to the Grand Canyon!
